As students gear up for a new academic session, it’s not just about stocking up on school supplies and preparing for classes. It’s also a good time to emphasize the significance of good etiquette. Etiquette isn’t merely about politeness; it plays a pivotal role in creating a harmonious learning environment and equipping students with crucial life skills.

Classroom etiquette refers to a set of socially acceptable behaviours, manners, and rules of conduct that govern how individuals should behave in a classroom or educational setting. 1. Respect for teachers and other students:

One of the essential rules of classroom etiquette is to be respectful.

Respect all teachers, adults, and other kids and cooperate with them. You should also respect the differences of others because it enhances feelings of trust, safety, and well-being.

• Wear your uniform and keep it neat and tidy

Keep in mind that you are an ambassador of your school. So, wear your school uniform and abide by the school’s dress code. Make sure your uniform is clean and tidy because a sloppy uniform is not cool and does not impress anyone. Do up your buttons properly and tuck your blouse or shirt in.

Also, keep a good haircut. Regarding jewellry, make-up, and other adornments, follow the teacher’s instructions and obey the school rules.

• Return borrowed items:

If you forget an item at home, such as a pen, a pencil, or a book, ask them politely, if they agree, take it. After you have finished using it, return it to your classmates and thank them for lending it to you.

• Raise Your Hand:

When you have a question or want to contribute to a discussion, raise your hand and patiently wait for your turn before giving your answers. Avoid chorusing your answers in the classroom or else you are told otherwise by the teacher.

• Be polite

Address classmates and teachers with courtesy, using please, thank you, and excuse me appropriately. Being polite is one of the significant rules of classroom etiquette, too.

• No bullying

Avoid bullying, whether verbal or physical. Bullying is inappropriate behaviour that shows the bully is a coward and weak person. Additionally, it may lead to disciplinary action being taken against the bully.

• Keep your class clean

Be organized and tidy. Never keep your classroom messy. Untidy places always cause distractions. Also, never throw sharp or hard items that could injure your colleagues.

• Avoid signalling or sending signs that class time is up.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when students attempt to signal that class is over by shutting their books loudly, unzipping and zipping their backpacks, and otherwise making noises that class time is complete. Some students actually get up and walk out of class.

• Always be punctual:

Another essential rule of classroom etiquette is to always be on time. If you arrive late, you interrupt the work and distract the teacher and the students. Additionally, you may annoy your teacher, and this is not good.

Arriving on time for class shows respect for the teacher’s time and ensures you don’t miss important information.

Active listening and participation

Paying attention to the teacher and fellow students when they are speaking is essential for understanding and retaining information. You should also be quiet and not disrupt the class. Wait patiently and ask questions when it’s your turn.
