Staff of Accessible Publishers Ltd., one of Nigeria’s leading publishing firms, attended a book reading session on Saturday, July 5, to engage with renowned author Uwem Akpan on his latest work, New York, My Village.
The event, held in Ibadan, brought together writers, literary enthusiasts, and industry stakeholders and featured esteemed journalist and writer Anote Ajeluorou, whose works with Accessible Publishers include Igho Goes to Farm and Bride of the Infidel.
In a lively session, Akpan unpacked the themes behind his debut novel, explaining that New York, My Village explores the Nigerian Civil War through the lens of Niger Delta minorities, whose stories he argued, have often been overshadowed in mainstream accounts of the conflict.
“It is important to bring the stories of the minorities into spaces where they can be heard and appreciated,” Akpan said, adding that the novel aims to fill gaps in prevailing narratives about the Biafran War and amplify overlooked voices.
The session featured questions and contributions from participants, with Accessible Publishers’ Uchechukwu Judith posing thought-provoking questions that sparked deeper reflections from the author. Other staff members present were Oyeyele Oluwakemi and Arikalamu Basma.
The event underscores Accessible Publishers’ commitment to staying connected with contemporary African literature while fostering engagement and partnerships within Nigeria’s vibrant literary community.
